Professor E.O Wilson

Professor Edward O. Wilson (1929-)

Bug BlitzTM patron Edward O. Wilson is a world-famous scientist, thinker, author conservationist and insect expert (entomologist) who has devoted his life to understanding and protecting the natural world.

Edward O Wilson"Science and technology have led us into the present bottleneck... Now science and technology, guided by a sound environmental ethic, must see us out."
(Edward O. Wilson).

After injuring an eye in a childhood fishing accident, Dr. Wilson began to zoom in on the tiny critters right under his nose. As a boy he studied ants and butterflies, and at age nine launched his first bug-hunt in the wilds of Alabama. Since then, the man known as ‘Darwin's heir' has written many books and won international prizes for his work on insect behaviour, ecology and natural history.

Wilson supports Bug BlitzTM in order to help young people learn about their local ecosystems in a creative, holistic and fun way. Bugs can teach us about the web of life - from the plants and birds in our backyards, to the health of our rivers and streams, to the role we humans play.
Planet Earth is facing some serious threats, says Dr. Wilson: climate change, loss of biodiversity, pollution, vanishing species, deforestation and water shortages. Humankind has been a big part of the problem - but we can also be part of the solution.

Bug BlitzTM brings home the importance of caring for fragile habitats. By looking after the natural world at a local level, we can help protect the future of life on Earth:

"When you cut a forest...you are not just removing a lot of big trees and a few birds fluttering around in the canopy. You are drastically imperiling a vast array of species within a few square miles. Many are still unknown to science, and science has not yet discovered the key role they undoubtedly play in the maintenance of that ecosystem." (E. O. Wilson)

Dr Wilson has twice won the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction, for On Human Nature and The Ants. His other ground-breaking books include The Future of Life, The Creation: an Appeal to Save Life on Earth, The Diversity of Life, Naturalist, Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge and The Theory of Island Biogeography. For more than 50 years he has worked at Harvard University, where he is a Professor Emeritus and Honorary Curator in Entomology.

Bug BlitzTM is in partnership with the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation, which works to protect biodiversity through conservation-driven business and educational projects.

Ed Wilson's dream project, The Encylopedia Of Life  an online database of species from around the world. The ants page, one of Wilson's favourites, and The Encyclopedia of Life is linked for you to check out.
