Record number of bugs found by kids at Giffard Flora Reserve

5th July 2012

Mealybug - Order - HemipteraKids from four small rural schools gathered at Giffard Flora Reserve, in between Sale and Yarram, for a Bug Blitz Field Day in April. There were about 150 kids participating in two programs; prep to year 2 and year 3 to 6.

The year 3-6 found about 60 different species of bugs whilst they explored the coastal woodland forest.

The strangest was a Mealy bug, which looks like a beetle however is in the bug family (Hemiptera). The kids had a great day. At Seaspray PS the students will complete a magazine extending their investigations of their local biodiversity.
